What is KOT in a restaurant?
Kitchen Order Tickets, explained simply.
Updated November 2026
KOT stands for Kitchen Order Ticket. It is the slip, or screen entry, that tells the kitchen what to cook. When a waiter takes an order at table 5, a KOT goes to the kitchen with the table number, the items, the quantities and any notes like "less spicy" or "no onion".
KOT vs bill
A KOT is for the kitchen and has no prices. A bill is for the guest and has prices, taxes and the total. A table can have several KOTs (starters, then mains, then dessert) but usually one final bill that adds them all up.
How a KOT flows in a restaurant
- The captain takes the order at the table, on a phone or a pad.
- The order is entered in the billing software, which creates a KOT.
- The KOT prints in the kitchen or shows on a kitchen display, split by station (tandoor, Chinese, bar).
- Cooks prepare the items and mark them ready.
- When the guest asks for the bill, all KOTs for that table become one bill.
Paper KOT vs kitchen display
Printed KOTs are cheap and familiar but get lost, smudged or mixed up. A kitchen display system keeps every order on screen until it is marked ready, and highlights late orders. Many restaurants run both while staff adjust.
Why KOTs stop leakage
When every dish must have a KOT, food cannot leave the kitchen without being recorded, and cancelled KOTs show up in reports. This is one of the simplest ways to stop losses at a busy restaurant.
QPOS creates KOTs from the counter or the captain app, prints them per station or shows them on the kitchen display, and tracks cancels in a leakage report. See the captain and kitchen apps.
Common questions
What is the full form of KOT?
KOT stands for Kitchen Order Ticket.
Does a KOT have prices?
No. A KOT only lists items, quantities, the table and notes for the kitchen. Prices appear on the final bill.
Can one table have more than one KOT?
Yes. Each new round of orders creates a new KOT, and all of them are added to one bill at the end.
